The Find of the Century

Its a story toy collectors dream about.  In 2002 a contractor was remodeling an abandoned home in a major metropolitan city and made a surprising find in a forgotten corner of a cluttered basement.  There, hidden and forgotten for over thirty years, were almost two hundred life size Star Trek Tricorder cassette players, super phaser target game phasers, and Star Trek communicator walkie talkies.  What exactly were all of these vintage toys doing in a basement?  Good question.

This Shipping Stamp was found on the wall of the former Mego Bohemia, NY Distribution Center.
Mego Corporation's entire department store return inventory of these items somehow made it from Mego's Bohemia, NY warehouse to a third party who was attempting to refurbish and resell them but for some reason it just never happened and instead they were forgotten for more than 30 years.

How it all started

Picture
In 1976 Mego Corporation produced the very first life sized replica Star Trek Tricorders.  In order to broaden their market appeal these tricorders were  released as cassette players which were considered cutting edge technology at the time.  These "toys" were fine quality, extremely detailed replicas- right down to their spinning multi-colored view screen dial and thick leather carry straps.

Although many collectors remember having the matching Star Trek communicator Walkie Talkies Mego made at the same time as the Tricorder, for some reason the Tricorder is much more rare and hard to find.  Likely the reason is because its higher price point simply resulted in less being produced.
