Mego Star Trek Action Figures at Grand Way Department Store circa 1974
Most Mego afficianados know that the Star Trek Mego series was originally lost of type 1 bodies (metal rivet joints) and that there was only five characters: Kirk, Spock, Scottie, Klingon, and Dr. McCoy. Very soon after launch Mego switched to type 2 bodies (plastic joints) and added Uhura to the series. The original series packaging is known as 5 face cards. Recently I found an intact collection of Star Trek Mego figures that were all purchased at Grand Way Department Store for $3.49 each. What was interesting about this collection is that apparently it was purchased at the exact moment when Mego was transitioning from the 5 face cards to the newer T2 versions. Of course, in the 70s inventory would sit for months or years but the fact that all of the toys in the collection have the same price tag of $3.49 leads me to believe that these are from that very short window where they were transitioning the line. I can just imagine being in that store looking at the mix of T1 and T2 figures on the shelves.
